German courses for adults in Frankfurt

Frankfurt stands on the banks of the River Main and is the centre of Europe´s economy and currency. Once a vital inland port and centre of trade, it is now Europe´s largest financial centre after London.

For many, Frankfurt is a city of sky scrapers. They have given Frankfurt the epithet, “Mainhatten”. A closer look reveals a metropolis of many charms; the houses are picturesque and many have been restored in the city centre. The unique “Museum Mile” along the banks of the river, which have become an altogether pleasurable zone for the flaneur, including cocktail bars and garden restaurants, invite you to enjoy extensive strolls and delicious local food and drinks.

The part of Frankfurt called “Sachsenhausen”, where the school is located, is said to be the most elegant district of the city. Actually, it has two parts: The old section is where you amble along narrow cobblestone streets amidst tiny gabled houses. This is where you will find pub after pub.

Old town of Frankfurt

Frankfurt in a Nutshell

• Location

Frankfurt is located in the Rhine-Main region in central Germany. It is part of the state of Hessen and is built along the River Main.

• Famous for

The European Central Bank, skyline, International Airport, Eintracht Frankfurt, Apple wine.

• School surroundings

The school is located in Sachsenhausen, an old, residential part of the city with lots of historical houses. Students cross the iron bridge “Eiserner Steg” to get to the heart of the city, which is only a short walk away. The Römer (a very famous historical square in front of the mayor's office), the Paulskirche (the cradle of German democracy) and a stunning view of Frankfurt’s skyscrapers and bank buildings are all within walking distance.

• Places of interest

Messe Tower, Museumsufer, Römer, Paulskirche, European Central Bank, Old Opera House, Trade Fair, Main Tower Platform, Zeil and Goethestrasse (Shopping), Commerzbank Arena (World Cup Stadium).

• Cities, towns and villages nearby

Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, Marburg, Darmstadt, Mainz, Aschaffenburg

• Special events

Mainuferfest, Dippemess, Museumsufer Fest, Christmas Market, Frankfurt Marathon, Ironman Frankfurt, Rund um den Henniger Turm.

• Shopping

The main shopping area in Frankfurt is called “Zeil”. There are all kinds of shops and it is the most popular (and the largest) shopping street in the whole region. Opening hours: 10:00 - 20:00 in the city centre, 10:00 - 19:00 in other areas.

• Nightlife

Nightlife in Frankfurt is great! Whether you just want to go out for a drink (maybe the typical “Eppelwein”) or dance the night away, there are many bars and clubs all over the city! Old Sachsenhausen is famous for its bars and traditional pubs, while in the centre one will find an array of trendy nightclubs. There are also several theatres, comedy clubs - and lots lots more! Opening hours: Bars: until 2 am Clubs: until 7 am.

• Public transport facilities

Students can get almost everywhere by bus, tube or tram. A single ticket costs about 2,50 EUR. Day tickets are available for about 6 EUR and a monthly pass can be bought for 75 EUR. Thanks to its location in the heart of Europe and Germany, Frankfurt is an important traffic hub and can be reached by visitors extremely easily by plane, train or car.

• Getting there from the airport

By bus: Not recommended
By train: Coming from the airport, take the S-Bahn (City Train) and get off at the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Take tram No 16 in front of the “Hauptbahnhof” towards “Offenbach Stadtgrenze”. Get off at “Schweizer-/Gartenstrasse”. The school is about a 2 minute walk from the station.
By taxi: Taxis can be found outside both terminals. The trip takes about 20 minutes and costs approx. 35 EUR.
